Kane's Trophy Ultimatum - image

Harry Kane has said Tottenham Hotspur need to start winning trophies for him stay at the club after Mauricio Pochettino admitted that he was powerless to keep the striker if he wanted to leave

This seems to be a significant change in stance from only a few months ago when he told German newspaper Bild am sonntag “My goal is to play my entire career only for Tottenham”

Spurs have not tasted silverware in 10 years and lost to Chelsea in the 2015 League Cup final in Kane’s breakthrough year. There is a fear among the Spurs players that winning trophies will become even harder, with Manchester City breaking the bank while the north London club tightens its belt before a move into a new stadium that could cost in excess of £750 million.

The transfer of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona highlights the fact that the when the biggest clubs call it is sometimes impossible for players not to listen and be tempted by the overtures.

“It’s a matter of opinion,” Kane said. “I think if a player wants to go then why would you stop him? He’s not going to be in the club, he’s not going to play every game, he’s not going to put his heart on the line so … from the Coutinho point of view I think he’s been very professional in the six months he has played this year and, look, Liverpool have got a good offer from Barcelona and accepted it so I wouldn’t say they’re powerless but I can see why if a player wants to go you would let him go.”

Asked whether players should stick to their contracts, Kane left room for doubt. “Again, it’s a matter of opinion,” he said. “It’s hard to talk about but the situation at the time, you kind of assess it and I suppose see what’s best for the team and what the manager wants to do and you go from there really.”

“I’ve always said: ‘keep progressing, keep getting better, start winning trophies’,” Kane explained. “That’s the aim, as long as the club keep doing that then I’m happy here.”

“We’ve been close in the league the last couple of years but the aim of the game is to win trophies and that’s what we’ve got to try and do,” Kane added.

“We’re still in the Champions League and the FA Cup and we know the Champions League will be tough so the FA Cup is one we have a good chance in. I think this year especially with the league, kind of being out of contention — of course we want to finish in the top four, but there’s a chance for us to win a competition so we’ll see.”

This ambiguity will certainly be worrying for Spurs fans knowing the interest that Real Madrid showed last summer. Next summer will be interesting and it would be a huge shame to lose one of the Premier leagues brightest stars to La Liga once more.
